출애굽기 18장

Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt. After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her and her two sons. one son was named Gershom, for Moses said, "I have become an alien in a foreign land"; and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, "My father's God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh." Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, together with Moses' sons and wife, came to him in the desert, where he was camped near the mountain of God. 미디안의 제사장이며 모세의 장인인 이드로는, 하나님이 모세와 그의 백성 이스라엘에게 하신 일, 곧 주님께서 어떻게 이스라엘을 이집트에서 인도하여 내셨는가 하는 것을 들었다. 모세의 장인 이드로는 친정에 돌아와 있는 모세의 아내 십보라와 십보라의 두 아들을 데리고 나섰다. 한 아들의 이름은 게르솜인데, 이 이름은 "내가 타국 땅에서 나그네가 되었구나" 하면서 모세가 지은 것이고, 또 한 아들의 이름은 엘리에셀인데, 이 이름은 그가 "내 아버지의 하나님이 나를 도우셔서, 바로의 칼에서 나를 건져 주셨다"고 하면서 지은 이름이다. 모세의 장인 이드로는 모세의 두 아들과 아내를 데리고 모세가 진을 치고 있는 광야로 갔는데, 그 곳은 바로 하나님의 산이 있는 곳이다.

Jethro had sent word to him, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons." So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them. Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the LORD had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. He said, "Praise be to the LORD, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 그는 거기에서 모세에게 전갈을 보냈다. "주님께서 이집트 사람의 손아귀와 바로의 손아귀에서 자네와 자네의 백성을 건져 주시고, 이 백성을 이집트 사람의 억압으로부터 건져 주셨으니, 주님은 마땅히 찬양을 받으실 분일세.

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly." Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God. The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, "What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?" Moses answered him, "Because the people come to me to seek God's will. 이스라엘에게 그토록 교만히 행한 그들에게 벌을 내리시고 치신 것을 보니, 주님이 그 어떤 신보다도 위대하시다는 것을 이제 나는 똑똑히 알겠네." 그리고 나서, 모세의 장인 이드로는 하나님께 번제물과 희생제물을 바쳤다. 아론과 이스라엘 장로들이 모두 와서, 하나님 앞에서 모세의 장인과 함께 제사 음식을 먹었다. 그 이튿날, 모세는 백성의 송사를 다루려고 자리에 앉고, 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 모세 곁에 서 있었다. 모세의 장인은 모세가 백성을 다스리는 이 일을 모두 보고, 이렇게 말하였다. "자네는 백성의 일을 어찌하여 이렇게 처리하는가? 어찌하여 아침부터 저녁까지 백성을 모두 자네 곁에 세워 두고, 자네 혼자만 앉아서 일을 처리하는가?" 모세가 그의 장인에게 대답하였다. "백성은 하나님의 뜻을 알려고 저를 찾아옵니다.

Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God's decrees and laws." Moses' father-in-law replied, "What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 그들은 무슨 일이든지 생기면 저에게로 옵니다. 그러면 저는 이웃간의 문제를 재판하여 주고, 하나님의 규례와 율법을 알려 주어야 합니다." 모세의 장인이 그에게 말하였다. "자네가 하는 일이 그리 좋지는 않네. 이렇게 하다가는, 자네뿐만 아니라 자네와 함께 있는 이 백성도 아주 지치고 말 걸세. 이 일이 자네에게는 너무 힘겨운 일이어서, 자네 혼자서는 할 수 없네. 이제 내가 충고하는 말을 듣게. 하나님이 자네와 함께 계시기를 바라네. 자네는 백성의 문제를 하나님께 가지고 가서, 하나님 앞에서 백성의 일을 아뢰게. 그리고 자네는 그들에게 규례와 율법을 가르쳐 주어서, 그들이 마땅히 가야 할 길과 그들이 마땅히 하여야 할 일을 알려 주게.

But select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain--and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied." Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 또 자네는 백성 가운데서 능력과 덕을 함께 갖춘 사람, 곧 하나님을 두려워하며 참되어서 거짓이 없으며 부정직한 소득을 싫어하는 사람을 뽑아서, 백성 위에 세우게. 그리고 그들을 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장으로 세워서, 그들이 사건이 생길 때마다 백성을 재판하도록 하게. 큰 사건은 모두 자네에게 가져 오게 하고, 작은 사건은 모두 그들이 스스로 재판하도록 하게. 이렇게 그들이 자네와 짐을 나누어 지면, 자네의 일이 훨씬 가벼워질 걸세. 하나님이 명하신 대로, 자네가 이와 같이 하면, 자네도 일을 쉽게 처리할 수 있을 것이고, 백성도 모두 흐뭇하게 자기 집으로 돌아갈 걸세." 그래서 모세는 장인의 말을 듣고, 그가 말한 대로 다 하였다. 모세는 온 이스라엘 사람 가운데서 유능한 사람들을 뽑고, 그들을 백성의 지도자로 삼아, 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장으로 세웠다.

They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves. Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country. 그들은 언제나 백성을 재판하였다. 어려운 사건은 모세에게 가져 오고, 작은 사건들은 모두 그들이 재판하였다. 얼마 있다가, 모세의 장인은 사위의 배웅을 받으며 살던 고장으로 돌아갔다.
