출애굽기 1장

These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt. 야곱과 함께 각각 자기 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려간 이스라엘의 아들들의 이름은, 르우벤과 시므온과 레위와 유다와 잇사갈과 스불론과 베냐민과 단과 납달리와 갓과 아셀이다. 이미 이집트에 내려가 있는 요셉까지 합하여, 야곱의 혈통에서 태어난 사람은 모두 일흔 명이다.

Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied greatly and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them. Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt. "Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become much too numerous for us. Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country." 세월이 지나서, 요셉과 그의 모든 형제와 그 시대 사람들은 다 죽었다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 자녀를 많이 낳고 번성하여, 그 수가 불어나고 세력도 커졌으며, 마침내 그 땅에 가득 퍼졌다. 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 일어나서 이집트를 다스리게 되었다. 그 왕이 자기 백성에게 말하였다. "이 백성 곧 이스라엘 자손이 우리보다 수도 많고, 힘도 강하다. 그러니 이제 우리는 그들에게 신중히 대처하여야 한다. 그렇게 하지 않으면 그들의 수가 더욱 불어날 것이고, 또 전쟁이라도 일어나는 날에는, 그들이 우리의 원수들과 합세하여 우리를 치고, 이 땅에서 떠나갈 것이다."

So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites and worked them ruthlessly. They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly. The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 그래서 이집트 사람들은, 이스라엘 자손을 부리는 공사 감독관을 두어서, 강제노동으로 그들을 억압하였다. 이스라엘 자손은, 바로가 곡식을 저장하는 성읍 곧 비돔과 라암셋을 건설하는 일에 끌려 나갔다. 그러나 그들은 억압을 받을수록 그 수가 더욱 불어나고, 자손이 번성하였다. 그래서 이집트 사람들은 이스라엘 자손을 몹시 싫어하였고, 그들을 더욱 혹독하게 부렸다. 이집트 사람들이, 흙을 이겨 벽돌을 만드는 일이나 밭일과 같은 온갖 고된 일로 이스라엘 자손을 괴롭히므로, 그들의 일은 매우 힘들었다. 한편 이집트 왕은 십브라와 부아라고 하는 히브리 산파들에게 이렇게 말하였다.

"When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth and observe them on the delivery stool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live." The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?" The midwives answered Pharaoh, "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive." So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. "너희는 히브리 여인이 아이 낳는 것을 도와줄 때에, 잘 살펴서, 낳은 아기가 아들이거든 죽이고, 딸이거든 살려 두어라." 그러나 산파들은 하나님을 두려워하였으므로, 이집트 왕이 그들에게 명령한 대로 하지 않고, 남자 아이들을 살려 두었다. 이집트 왕이 산파들을 불러들여, 그들을 꾸짖었다. "어찌하여 일을 이렇게 하였느냐? 어찌하여 남자 아이들을 살려 두었느냐?" 산파들이 바로에게 대답하였다. "히브리 여인들은 이집트 여인들과 같지 않습니다. 그들은 기운이 좋아서, 산파가 그들에게 이르기도 전에 아기를 낳아 버립니다." 그래서 하나님이 산파들에게 은혜를 베풀어 주셨으며, 이스라엘 백성은 크게 불어났고, 매우 강해졌다.

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own. Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live." 하나님은 산파들이 하나님을 두려워하는 것을 보시고, 그들의 집안을 번성하게 하셨다. 마침내 바로는 모든 백성에게 명령을 내렸다. "갓 태어난 히브리 남자 아이는 모두 강물에 던지고, 여자 아이들만 살려 두어라."
