창세기 48장

Some time later Joseph was told, "Your father is ill." So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him. When Jacob was told, "Your son Joseph has come to you," Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed. Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me and said to me, 'I am going to make you fruitful and will increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.' "Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine. 이런 일이 있은 지 얼마 되지 않아서, 요셉은 아버지의 병환 소식을 들었다. 요셉은 두 아들 므낫세와 에브라임을 데리고, 아버지를 뵈러 갔다. 야곱 곧 이스라엘은 자기의 아들 요셉이 왔다는 말을 듣고서, 기력을 다하여 침상에서 일어나 앉았다. 야곱이 요셉에게 말하였다. "전능하신 하나님이 가나안 땅 루스에서 나에게 나타나셔서, 거기에서 나에게 복을 허락하시면서, 나에게 이르시기를 '내가 너에게 수많은 자손을 주고, 그 수가 불어나게 하겠다. 내가 너에게서 여러 백성이 나오게 하고, 이 땅을 너의 자손에게 주어서, 영원한 소유가 되게 하겠다' 하셨다. 내가 너를 보려고 여기 이집트로 오기 전에 네가 이집트 땅에서 낳은 두 아이는, 내가 낳은 아들로 삼고 싶다. 르우벤과 시므온이 나의 아들이듯이, 에브라임과 므낫세도 나의 아들이다.

Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. As I was returning from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath" (that is, Bethlehem). When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, "Who are these?" "They are the sons God has given me here," Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, "Bring them to me so I may bless them." Now Israel's eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them. 이 두 아이 다음에 낳은 자식들은 너의 아들이다. 이 두 아이는 형들과 함께 유산을 상속받게 할 것이다. 내가 밧단을 떠나서 고향으로 돌아올 때에, 슬프게도, 너의 어머니 라헬이 가나안 땅에 다 와서, 조금만 더 가면 에브랏에 이를 것인데, 그만 길에서 세상을 떠나고 말았다. 나는 너의 어머니를 에브랏 곧 베들레헴으로 가는 길 옆에 묻었다." 이스라엘이 요셉의 아들들을 보면서 물었다. "아이들을 나에게로 가까이 데리고 오너라. 내가 아이들에게 축복하겠다." 이스라엘은 나이가 많았으므로, 눈이 어두워서 앞을 볼 수 없었다. 요셉이 두 아들을 아버지에게로 이끌고 가니, 야곱이 그들에게 입을 맞추고 끌어안았다.

Israel said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too." Then Joseph removed them from Israel's knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel's left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel's right hand, and brought them close to him. But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim's head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh's head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn. Then he blessed Joseph and said, "May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, 이스라엘이 요셉에게 말하였다. "내가 너의 얼굴을 다시 볼 것이라고는 생각도 못하였는데, 이제 하나님은, 내가 너의 자식들까지 볼 수 있도록 허락하셨구나." 요셉은 이스라엘의 무릎 사이에서 두 아이들을 물러나게 하고, 땅에 얼굴을 대고 엎드려서 절을 하였다. 그런 다음에 요셉은 두 아이를 데려다가, 오른손으로 에브라임을 이끌어서 이스라엘의 왼쪽에 서게 하고, 왼손으로 므낫세를 이끌어서 이스라엘의 오른쪽에 서게 하였다. 그런데 이스라엘은, 에브라임이 작은 아들인데도 그의 오른손을 에브라임의 머리 위에 얹고, 므낫세는 맏아들인데도 그의 왼손을 므낫세의 머리 위에 얹었다. 야곱이 그의 팔을 엇갈리게 내민 것이다. 야곱이 요셉을 축복하였다. "나의 할아버지 아브라함과 아버지 이삭을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 내가 태어난 날로부터 오늘에 이르기까지 나의 목자가 되어주신 하나님,

the Angel who has delivered me from all harm --may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly upon the earth." When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim's head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. Joseph said to him, "No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head." But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations." He blessed them that day and said, "In your name will Israel pronounce this blessing: 'May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' " So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh. 온갖 어려움에서 나를 건져 주신 천사께서 이 아이들에게 복을 내려 주시기를 빕니다. 나의 이름과 할아버지의 이름 아브라함과 아버지의 이름 이삭이 이 아이들에게서 살아 있게 하여 주시기를 빕니다. 이 아이들의 자손이 이 땅에서 크게 불어나게 하여 주시기를 빕니다." 요셉은 아버지가 오른손을 에브라임의 머리 위에 얹은 것을 보고서, 못마땅하게 여겼다. 요셉은 아버지의 오른손을 에브라임의 머리에서 므낫세의 머리로 옮기려고, 아버지의 오른손을 잡고 말하였다. "아닙니다, 아버지! 이 아이가 맏아들입니다. 아버지의 오른손을 큰 아이의 머리에 얹으셔야 합니다." 그러나 그의 아버지는 거절하면서 대답하였다. "나도 안다. 내 아들아, 나도 안다. 므낫세가 한 겨레를 이루고 크게 되겠지만, 그 아우가 형보다 더 크게 되고, 아우의 자손에게서 여러 겨레가 갈라져 나올 것이다." 그 날, 야곱은 이렇게 그들을 축복하였다. "이스라엘 백성이 너희의 이름으로 축복할 것이니 '하나님이 너를 에브라임과 같고 므낫세와 같게 하시기를 빈다'고 할 것이다." 이렇게 야곱은 에브라임을 므낫세보다 앞세웠다.

Then Israel said to Joseph, "I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers. And to you, as one who is over your brothers, I give the ridge of land I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow." 이스라엘이 요셉에게 말하였다. "나는 곧 죽는다. 그러나 하나님이 너희와 함께 계시고, 너희를 조상들의 땅으로 돌아가게 하실 것이다. 그리고 네 형제들 위에 군림할 너에게는, 세겜을 더 준다. 세겜은 내가 칼과 활로 아모리 사람의 손에서 빼앗은 것이다."
