When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!" Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?" Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my maidservant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family." So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, and she became pregnant and bore him a son. 라헬은 자기와 야곱 사이에 아이가 없으므로, 언니를 시새우며, 야곱에게 말하였다. "나도 아이 좀 낳게 해주셔요. 그렇지 않으면, 죽어 버리겠어요." 야곱이 라헬에게 화를 내면서 말하였다. Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan. Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, "I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. Then Leah said, "What good fortune!" So she named him Gad. Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher. During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes." But she said to her, "Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son's mandrakes too?" "Very well," Rachel said, "he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes." 레아는 "내가 복을 받았구나" 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 갓이라고 하였다. 레아의 몸종 실바와 야곱 사이에서 두 번째로 아들이 태어났다. 레아는 "행복하구나, 여인들이 나를 행복하다고 말하리라" 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 아셀이라고 하였다. 보리를 거두어들일 때에, 르우벤이 들에 나갔다가, 자귀나무를 발견하여, 어머니 레아에게 가져다 주니, 라헬이 레아에게 말하였다. So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me," she said. "I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he slept with her that night. God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. Then Leah said, "God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband." So she named him Issachar. Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. Then Leah said, "God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. 그 날 저녁에 야곱이 들에서 돌아올 때에, 레아가 그를 맞으러 나가서 말하였다. "당신은 오늘 밤에는 나의 방으로 드셔야 해요. 나의 아들이 가져온 자귀나무를 라헬에게 주고, 그 대신에 당신이 나의 방으로 드시게 하기로 했어요." 그 날 밤에 야곱은 레아와 함께 잤다. 하나님이 레아의 호소를 들어 주셔서, 레아가 임신을 하였고, 야곱과의 사이에서 다섯 번째 아들을 낳았다. 레아는 "내가 나의 몸종을 나의 남편에게 준 값을 하나님이 갚아 주셨구나" 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 잇사갈이라고 하였다. 레아가 다시 임신을 하여서, 야곱과의 사이에 여섯 번째 아들이 태어났다. 레아는 "하나님이 나에게 이렇게 좋은 선물을 주셨구나. 내가 아들을 여섯이나 낳았으니, 이제부터는 나의 남편이 나에게 잘 해주겠지" 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 스불론이라고 하였다.

Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah. Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my disgrace." She named him Joseph, and said, "May the LORD add to me another son." After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. 얼마 뒤에 레아가 딸을 낳고, 그 아이 이름을 디나라고 하였다. 하나님은 라헬도 기억하셨다. 하나님이 라헬의 호소를 들으시고, 그의 태를 열어 주셨다. 그가 임신을 하여서 아들을 낳으니, "하나님이 나의 부끄러움을 벗겨 주셨구나" 하고 생각하였다. 라헬은 그 아이의 이름을 지을 때에 "주님께서 나에게 또 다른 아들 하나를 더 주시면 좋겠다" 하는 뜻으로, 그 아이 이름을 요셉이라고 하였다. 라헬이 요셉을 낳은 뒤에, 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. "제가 고향 땅으로 돌아갈 수 있도록, 저를 보내 주십시오.

Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I've done for you." But Laban said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you." He added, "Name your wages, and I will pay them." Jacob said to him, "You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the LORD has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?" 장인 어른의 일을 해 드리고 얻은 저의 처들과 자식들도, 제가 데리고 가게 허락하여 주십시오. 제가 장인 어른의 일을 얼마나 많이 해 드렸는가 하는 것은, 장인 어른께서 잘 아십니다." 라반이 그에게 말하였다. "자네가 나를 좋아하면, 여기에 머물러 있기를 바라네. 주님께서 자네를 보시고 나에게 복을 주신 것을, 내가 점을 쳐 보고서 알았네." 라반은 또 덧붙였다. "자네의 품삯은 자네가 정하게. 정하는 그대로 주겠네." 야곱이 그에게 말하였다. "제가 장인 어른의 일을 어떻게 해 드리고, 장인 어른의 가축 떼를 얼마나 잘 보살폈는지는, 장인 어른께서 잘 아십니다. 제가 여기에 오기 전에는 장인 어른의 소유가 얼마 되지 않았으나, 이제 떼가 크게 불어났습니다. 주님께서는, 제가 하는 수고를 보시고서, 장인 어른에게 복을 주셨습니다. 그러나 이제는, 제가 저의 살림을 챙겨야 할 때가 되었다고 봅니다."

"What shall I give you?" he asked. "Don't give me anything," Jacob replied. "But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen." "Agreed," said Laban. "Let it be as you have said." That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. 라반이 물었다. "그러세. 자네가 말한 대로 하겠네." 그러나 라반은 이렇게 말해 놓고서도, 바로 그 날로 숫염소 가운데서 줄무늬가 있는 것과 점이 있는 것을 가려내고, 또 모든 암염소 가운데서도 흰 바탕에 얼룩이 진 것과 점이 있는 것과 모든 검은 새끼 양을 가려내어, 자기의 아들들에게 주었다.

Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban's flocks. Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban's animals. 그런 다음에 라반은, 야곱이 있는 데서 사흘 길을 더 나가서, 자기와 야곱 사이의 거리를 그만큼 뜨게 하였다. 야곱은 라반의 나머지 양 떼를 쳤다. 야곱은, 미루나무와 감복숭아나무와 플라타너스 나무에서 푸른 가지들을 꺾어서 껍질을 벗긴 다음에, 벗긴 가지에 흰 무늬를 냈다. 야곱은, 껍질을 벗긴 그 흰 무늬 가지들을 물 먹이는 구유 안에 똑바로 세워 놓고, 양 떼가 와서 물을 먹을 때에, 바로 눈 앞에 세워 놓은 그 가지들을 볼 수 있게 하였다. 양들은 물을 먹으러 와서, 거기에서 교미를 하였다. 양들은, 껍질 벗긴 그 나뭇가지 앞에서 교미를 하고서, 줄무늬가 있거나 얼룩이 지거나 점이 있는 양을 낳았다. 야곱은 이런 새끼 양들을 따로 떼어 놓았다. 라반의 가축 떼 가운데서, 줄무늬가 있거나 검은 양들은 다 가려냈다. 야곱은 이렇게 자기 가축 떼를 따로 가려내서, 라반의 가축 떼와 섞이지 않게 하였다.

Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys. 야곱은, 튼튼한 암컷들이 교미할 때에는, 물 먹이는 구유에 껍질 벗긴 가지들을 놓아서, 그 가지 앞에서 교미하도록 하곤 하였다. 그러나 약한 것들이 교미할 때에는, 그 가지들을 거기에 놓지 않았다. 그래서 약한 것들은 라반에게로 가게 하고, 튼튼한 것들은 야곱에게로 오게 하였다. 이렇게 하여, 야곱은 아주 큰 부자가 되었다. 야곱은 가축 떼뿐만 아니라, 남종과 여종, 낙타와 나귀도 많이 가지게 되었다.
