창세기 28장

So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau. 이삭이 야곱을 불러서, 그에게 복을 빌어 주고 당부하였다. "너는 가나안 사람의 딸들 가운데서 아내를 맞이하지 말아라. 이제 곧 밧단아람에 계시는 브두엘 외할아버지 댁으로 가서, 거기에서 너의 외삼촌 라반의 딸들 가운데서 네 아내가 될 사람을 찾아서 결혼하여라. 전능하신 하나님이 너에게 복을 주셔서, 너로 생육하고 번성하게 하시고, 마침내 네가 여러 민족을 낳게 하실 것이다. 하나님이 아브라함에게 허락하신 복을 너와 네 자손에게도 주셔서, 네가 지금 나그네살이를 하고 있는 이 땅, 하나님이 아브라함에게 주신 이 땅을, 네가 유산으로 받을 수 있도록 해주시기를 바란다." 이렇게 복을 빌어 준 뒤에, 이삭은 야곱을 보냈다. 야곱은 밧단아람으로 가서, 라반에게 이르렀다. 라반은 아람 사람 브두엘의 아들이며, 야곱과 에서의 어머니인 리브가의 오라버니이다.

Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." 어떤 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 해가 저물었으므로, 거기에서 하룻밤을 지내게 되었다. 그는 돌 하나를 주워서 베개로 삼고, 거기에 누워서 자다가, 꿈을 꾸었다. 그가 보니, 땅에 층계가 있고, 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿아 있고, 하나님의 천사들이 그 층계를 오르락내리락 하고 있었다. 주님께서 그 층계 위에 서서 말씀하셨다. "나는 주, 너의 할아버지 아브라함을 보살펴 준 하나님이요, 너의 아버지 이삭을 보살펴 준 하나님이다. 네가 지금 누워 있는 이 땅을, 내가 너와 너의 자손에게 주겠다. 너의 자손이 땅의 티끌처럼 많아질 것이며, 동서 남북 사방으로 퍼질 것이다. 이 땅 위의 모든 백성이 너와 너의 자손 덕에 복을 받게 될 것이다. 내가 너와 함께 있어서, 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지켜 주며, 내가 너를 다시 이 땅으로 데려 오겠다. 내가 너에게 약속한 것을 다 이루기까지, 내가 너를 떠나지 않겠다."

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 야곱은 잠에서 깨어서, 혼자 생각하였다. '주님께서 분명히 이 곳에 계시는데도, 내가 미처 그것을 몰랐구나.' 그는 두려워하면서 중얼거렸다. "이 얼마나 두려운 곳인가! 이 곳은 다름아닌 하나님의 집이다. 여기가 바로 하늘로 들어가는 문이다." 야곱은 다음날 아침 일찍이 일어나서, 베개 삼아 벤 그 돌을 가져다가 기둥으로 세우고, 그 위에 기름을 붓고, 그 곳 이름을 베델이라고 하였다. 그 성의 본래 이름은 루스였다. 야곱은 이렇게 서원하였다. "하나님께서 저와 함께 계시고, 제가 가는 이 길에서 저를 지켜 주시고, 먹을 것과 입을 것을 주시고,

so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth." 제가 안전하게 저의 아버지 집으로 돌아가게 해주시면, 주님이 저의 하나님이 되실 것이며, 제가 기둥으로 세운 이 돌이 하나님의 집이 될 것이며, 하나님께서 저에게 주신 모든 것에서 열의 하나를 하나님께 드리겠습니다."
