창세기 18장

The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way--now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say." 주님께서 마므레의 상수리나무 곁에서 아브라함에게 나타나셨다. 한창 더운 대낮에, 아브라함은 자기의 장막 어귀에 앉아 있었다. 아브라함이 고개를 들고 보니, 웬 사람 셋이 자기의 맞은쪽에 서 있었다. 그는 그들을 보자, 장막 어귀에서 달려나가서, 그들을 맞이하며, 땅에 엎드려서 절을 하였다. 아브라함이 말하였다. "손님들께서 저를 좋게 보시면, 이 종의 곁을 그냥 지나가지 마시기 바랍니다. 물을 좀 가져 오라고 하셔서, 발을 씻으시고, 이 나무 아래에서 쉬시기 바랍니다. 손님들께서 잡수실 것을, 제가 조금 가져 오겠습니다. 이렇게 이 종에게로 오셨으니, 좀 잡수시고, 기분이 상쾌해진 다음에 길을 떠나시기 바랍니다." 그들이 대답하였다. "좋습니다. 정 그렇게 하라고 하시면, 사양하지 않겠습니다."

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread." Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said. Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 아브라함이 장막 안으로 뛰어 들어가서, 사라에게 말하였다. "빨리 고운 밀가루 세 스아를 가지고 와서, 반죽을 하여 빵을 좀 구우시오." 아브라함이 집짐승 떼가 있는 데로 달려가서, 기름진 좋은 송아지 한 마리를 끌어다가, 하인에게 주니, 하인이 재빨리 그것을 잡아서 요리하였다. 아브라함이 엉긴 젖과 우유와 하인이 만든 송아지 요리를 나그네들 앞에 차려 놓았다. 그들이 나무 아래에서 먹는 동안에, 아브라함은 서서, 시중을 들었다. 그들이 아브라함에게 물었다. "댁의 부인 사라는 어디에 있습니까?" 아브라함이 대답하였다. "장막 안에 있습니다." 그 때에 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "다음 해 이맘때에, 내가 반드시 너를 다시 찾아오겠다. 그 때에 너의 아내 사라에게 아들이 있을 것이다." 사라는, 아브라함이 등지고 서 있는 장막 어귀에서 이 말을 들었다.

Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?" Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son." Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh." 아브라함과 사라는 이미 나이가 많은 노인들이고, 사라는 월경마저 그쳐서, 아이를 낳을 나이가 지난 사람이다. 그러므로 사라는 "나는 기력이 다 쇠진하였고, 나의 남편도 늙었는데, 어찌 나에게 그런 즐거운 일이 있으랴!" 하고, 속으로 웃으면서 중얼거렸다. 그 때에 주님께서 아브라함에게 말씀하셨다. "어찌하여 사라가 웃으면서 '이 늙은 나이에 내가 어찌 아들을 낳으랴?' 하느냐? 나 주가 할 수 없는 일이 있느냐? 다음 해 이맘때에, 내가 다시 너를 찾아오겠다. 그 때에 사라에게 아들이 있을 것이다." 사라는 두려워서 거짓말을 하였다. "저는 웃지 않았습니다." 그러나 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "아니다. 너는 웃었다."

When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. Then the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him." Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 그 사람들이 떠나려고 일어서서, 소돔이 내려다보이는 데로 갔다. 아브라함은 그들을 바래다 주려고, 함께 얼마쯤 걸었다. 그 때에 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "내가 앞으로 하려고 하는 일을, 어찌 아브라함에게 숨기랴? 아브라함은 반드시 크고 강한 나라를 이룰 것이며, 땅 위에 있는 나라마다, 그로 말미암아 복을 받게 될 것이다. 내가 아브라함을 선택한 것은, 그가 자식들과 자손을 잘 가르쳐서, 나에게 순종하게 하고, 옳고 바른 일을 하도록 가르치라는 뜻에서 한 것이다. 그의 자손이 아브라함에게 배운 대로 하면, 나는 아브라함에게 약속한 대로 다 이루어 주겠다." 주님께서 또 말씀하셨다. "소돔과 고모라에서 들려 오는 저 울부짖는 소리가 너무 크다. 그 안에서 사람들이 엄청난 죄를 저지르고 있다.

that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know." The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing--to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?" 이제 내가 내려가서, 거기에서 벌어지는 모든 악한 일이 정말 나에게까지 들려 온 울부짖음과 같은 것인지를 알아보겠다." 그 사람들은 거기에서 떠나서 소돔으로 갔으나, 아브라함은 주님 앞에 그대로 서 있었다. 아브라함이 주님께 가까이 가서 아뢰었다. "주님께서 의인을 기어이 악인과 함께 쓸어 버리시렵니까? 그 성 안에 의인이 쉰 명이 있으면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 그래도 주님께서는 그 성을 기어이 쓸어 버리시렵니까? 의인 쉰 명을 보시고서도, 그 성을 용서하지 않으시렵니까? 그처럼 의인을 악인과 함께 죽게 하시는 것은, 주님께서 하실 일이 아닙니다. 의인을 악인과 똑같이 보시는 것도, 주님께서 하실 일이 아닌 줄 압니다. 세상을 심판하시는 분께서는 공정하게 판단하셔야 하지 않겠습니까?"

The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake." Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?" "If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it." Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?" He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it." Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?" He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there." 주님께서 대답하셨다. "소돔 성에서 내가 의인 쉰 명만을 찾을 수 있으면, 그들을 보아서라도 그 성 전체를 용서하겠다." 아브라함이 다시 아뢰었다. "티끌이나 재밖에 안 되는 주제에, 제가 주님께 감히 아룁니다. 의인이 쉰 명에서 다섯이 모자란다고 하면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 다섯이 모자란다고, 성 전체를 다 멸하시겠습니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "내가 거기에서 마흔다섯 명만 찾아도, 그 성을 멸하지 않겠다." 아브라함이 다시 한 번 주님께 아뢰었다. "거기에서 마흔 명만 찾으시면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "그 마흔 명을 보아서, 내가 그 성을 멸하지 않겠다." 아브라함이 또 아뢰었다. "주님! 노하지 마시고, 제가 말씀드리는 것을 허락하여 주시기 바랍니다. 거기에서 서른 명만 찾으시면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "거기에서 서른 명만 찾아도, 내가 그 성을 멸하지 않겠다."

Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?" He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it." Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?" He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it." When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home. 아브라함이 다시 아뢰었다. "감히 주님께 아룁니다. 거기에서 스무 명만 찾으시면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "스무 명을 보아서라도, 내가 그 성을 멸하지 않겠다." 아브라함이 또 아뢰었다. "주님! 노하지 마시고, 제가 한 번만 더 말씀드리게 허락하여 주시기 바랍니다. 거기에서 열 명만 찾으시면, 어떻게 하시겠습니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "열 명을 보아서라도, 내가 그 성을 멸하지 않겠다." 주님께서는 아브라함과 말씀을 마치신 뒤에 곧 가시고, 아브라함도 자기가 사는 곳으로 돌아갔다.
